2022 Ford Explorer vs. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Advantage: Ford

The Ford Explorer is one of the best-selling SUVs in America, and for good reason. The 2022 edition provides three rows and can seat as many as seven. The Ford Explorer at Bill Fick Ford in Huntsville, TX has muscular engines and provides lots of room for cargo. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another popular full-size SUV, although not as popular as the Ford Explorer. Let's compare the two and see which is better for you and your family.

Engines

The base engine in the 2022 Ford Explorer is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower. Surprisingly enough, the Explorer's four-cylinder engine gets slightly more horsepower than the base V6 engine in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, yet the Explorer gets better gas mileage. In addition, the top-end Ford Explorer V6 engine gets 400 horsepower while the Jeep Cherokee's V8 can only get up to 357 horsepower. Too bad, Jeep.

Performance

Even the base turbo four-cylinder engine in the 2022 Explorer provides a satisfying level of performance with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is very good and gives you what one car reviewer called "hearty passing power" on the highway. The 2022 Ford Explorer can take you higher with its 3.0-liter V6 that produces 400 horsepower. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, as one reviewer put it, "won't get your heart racing."

Gas mileage

This is another case where the 2022 Ford Explorer takes better care of families at a time when gas prices have risen higher. The 2022 Ford Explorer gets up to 27 mpg in the city even at the bottom end of its fuel efficiency range, while the poor Jeep Grand Cherokee can only get up to 14 mpg in the city with its least-efficient model. At the high end, the Explorer gets 28 mpg/highway while the Grand Cherokee can do a max of only 26 mpg/highway.

Interior

For 2022, the Ford Explorer gives you more legroom in both front and back rows than the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Explorer also has more headroom than the Grand Cherokee in both the front and back rows. Of course, families needs cargo space and the 2022 Ford Explorer gives you a big advantage there: 87.8 cubic feet for the Explorer vs. only 70.8 cubic feet for the 2022 Grand Cherokee. The Explorer seats 7, Grand Cherokee only 5.

Technology

In this category, the two vehicles are pretty even. Both the new Ford Explorer and the Jeep Grand Cherokee give you a six-speaker stereo system at the base level along with smartphone compatibility, and both give you the option of upgrading to more speakers. Last but not least, both the 2022 Ford Explorer and the comparable Jeep Grand Cherokee give your family the option of an available rear-seat entertainment system.

Safety

Both vehicles do a good job of keeping you and your family safe on the highway. The two SUVs each give you a forward collision warning system that can alert you when it senses a collision is imminent. Forward automatic braking in both models can then bring your vehicle to an emergency stop to help prevent the collision completely.
